Explore Copenhagen with Me

So I’m sure many of you who follow me on social media know that I just returned from Copenhagen where I spent awesome 3 days with my sister. If you don’t follow me please do check out my INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK, TWITTER and subscribe as I would be so happy to have you on board. I thought to share this post and have your explore Copenhagen with me, even if it’s only through pictures. I love Copenhagen and we spent most of our time walking around.

I explored most areas apart from Christianshavn but that I will do the next time I’m in town. I will actually try to go in Spring/Summer as daylight will serve me better for picture taking and cold temperatures won’t stop me from wandering around. In this post, I decided to share the areas that are a must if you are going to Copenhagen and all the little bars and cafes we stopped in along the way for a quick meal mainly of soup as it was quite cold and windy so we needed something to warm us up. On Monday, I will share our visit to Kong Hans Kælder which is one of the top Michelin Star restaurants in Copenhagen where we spent more than 4 hours of eating the most delicious dishes.

VESTERBRO

We stayed in Vesterbro and naturally this is the first area we explored. I live in East London so I quickly recognised that Vesterbro is pretty much East London of Copenhagen with a dash of Soho, if I may add. It’s such a lively area filled with designers shops, cafes, bars and restaurant and it’s also a home to revamped Meatpacking District which is perfect for a night out. If you are looking for that sophisticated Danish vibe that I’d say Vesterbro is the place to check out.

We spent our first day here and if you find yourself in the area I can recommend a brunch in the Barbar Bar located in a picturesque square in Vesterbrogade where we enjoyed a rather delicious Salmon and Shrimp salad as well as their classic Cheeseburger which was amazing. I thought that their food prices weren’t as high as in the central parts of Copenhagen; also, if the weather is nice you can sit outside and people watch as the Bar is located right on the edge of the square.

From there we took a little walk towards the Mikkeller Bar that offers 20 rotating taps with the best beers from their own brewery, the place is quite small but so pretty and the bartender was so cute.

We wandered around little more and stumbled upon Laura’s Bakery in Blågårdsgade located in a little dreamy Cul-de-Sac. We had a coffee here as we were quite full from our lunch but I wish I was hungry as they offered cakes and snacks which looked so delicious. Coffee was also nice and we had a little break from walking, we sat outside and it was little chilli but they had blankets which helped. The atmosphere was still very Christmassy so we didn’t mind the cold as much.

After Laura’s, we headed back to the hotel for a quick change of clothes before going out for dinner in the Meatpacking District. There are so many restaurants to choose from but we craved carbs (thank you winter) and opted for Mother, a well know Italian restaurant that serves authentic Napoli style pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven, we washed our pizzas down with Montepulciano, a perfect way to warm up on a cold winter evening.

NYHAVN

The next location in the explore Copenhagen with me post is a must visit Nyhavn a 17th – century waterfront with the most picturesque townhouses, bars and restaurants. The canal is filled with old wooden ships and surrounded by cobbled streets which are a must visit. Nyhavn is apparently known as the longest outdoor bar in Scandinavia as it has so many restaurants, cafés and cozy eating places overlooking the canal. From our hotel in Vesterbro we walked via Strøget also known as the main pedestrian shopping area where you can find all the big brands including Hemes, Michael Kors, Zara and my favourite Sephora. The second day was so windy that we stopped to drink and eat little more than usual. The first stop on our way to Nyhavn was Café Norden where we had the best Tomato Soup I cal almost say ever, I can’t recommend this soup enough. Café Norden is a very busy venue split across 2 floors, once you walk in just find a seat, order at the bar and your food will arrive within 20 minutes. After we warmed up a little it was much easier to continue our exploration of Nyhavn. I took a bunch of pictures to show you guys.

LITTLE MERMAID

From Nyhavn, we took a left turn via Lille Strandstraede towards Amalienborg or the winter home of the Danish royal family and it consists of four identical classical palaces. Here you can also watch the changing of the Royal Guards as they march from their barracks in Gothersgade 100 by Rosenborg Castle through the streets of Copenhagen and end up at Amalienborg, where the changing of the guard takes place at 12:00 noon.

We continued along Amaliegade towards the statue of Little Mermaid passing Gefion Fountain which shows a group of animal figures, including snakes being driven by the Norse goddess Gefjun. We continued through the Longeline Park towards the statue of Little Mermaid displayed on a rock by the waterside at the Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen. The statue is beautiful and a must see.

Langelinie surrounds Kastellet which was our next location to see. Kastellet serves as a public park and historic site and it consists of a number of buildings and it’s apparently one of the best-preserved star fortresses in Northern Europe.

By now as you can imagine, we were so hungry and cold that we decided that it’s probably a time for another soup. We walked down Fredericiagade towards Café Oscar where we stopped to warm up. It was quite busy, but Potato Soup was quite delicious, although not as good as Tomato soup at Café Norden.

We also wanted to go to Malmo for a day as it’s only 34 minutes away, unfortunately, the weather took it out of me so we decided to take it chilled for the rest of our stay.

I hope you guys enjoyed the post and comment below if you have been to any of these places or planning a visit to Copenhagen soon.
