Wonder.Land at The National Theatre

Happy Monday loves! I’m staying away from travelling for a month or two as I will be focusing on exploring London more as there is always so many amazing things to do and see. Having said that The National Theatre invited me to see their latest musical on Friday called Wonder.Land created by Damon Albarn, Moira Buffini and Rufus Norris where I had the chance to go backstage and explore costume and props rooms, see the pre-show exhibition as well as hear Rufus who is one of the directors talk about what inspired the show and its journey.

The musical wonder.land is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland but brought forward to the digital age that we all live in. It explores the blurred boundaries between our online and offline lives and even though it’s based on a life of a teenager and the struggles that one goes through growing up, I could recognise parts of my own life in the show despite the fact that I left my teenage years behind so long ago. It’s not a secret that we all experience struggles of a day to day life all the time that sometimes is so easy to find comfort online. My blog which allowed me to build a small community of people online that I communicate almost on a daily basis with via blog or social media is my wonder.land. I keep on thinking about the life that I’m building online which despite the danger elements is one of the best things that happened to me. It’s astonishing how easy is to escape your day to day routine and create an online life that is so full of potential for both work and friendships.

Alice is no different, she struggles from the pressures of being a teenager, being bullied in school, feeling fat and ugly which prompts her to discover a new mysterious online world where, perhaps, she can create a whole new life where she is trying to figure out who she actually is? She enters the whole new world or wonder.land where she can look and be exactly who she wants to be, have new friendships and most of all discover who she really is. I don’t want to give out too much, there are a lot of elements from the traditional Alice in Wonderland including the White Rabbit, the Caterpillar, Dormouse, the Dodo, Tweedledee and Tweedledum and the Red Queen along with the whole bunch of new characters from Alice’s real life.

The production of the show is absolutely amazing, digital technology combined with the classical theatre created a unique experience which we well enjoyed and left entirely entertained.

I felt so privileged to be invited backstage and to be invited to the show as press, the entire experience was so amazing including the pre-show exhibition that you must see if you are coming to see the show.  I have included the trailer for your guys, the show is playing at the National Theather at the Southbank London until 30th of April, after which wonder.land will visit the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris in June 2016. Tickets start from £15 and you can see showtimes HERE.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Do you guys like seeing musicals and which is your current favourite?
