Essaouira is a beautiful coastal city located in the western region of Morocco. The city has a rich history, diverse culture, and natural beauty that make it a must-visit destination for travellers.
But what sets Essaouira apart is its spiritual energy that has attracted me and other visitors alike from around the world.
Why Visit Essaouira in Morocco
The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive in Essaouira is the laid-back atmosphere. The city has a slower pace of life compared to other Moroccan cities, making it an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation and reflection.
The city’s winding streets are lined with white and blue buildings that offer a sense of calmness. The beach is the perfect place to unwind and soak in the sun.
In addition to its laid-back atmosphere, Essaouira is also known for its spiritual energy. The city has a long history of mysticism and spirituality that dates back to the 18th century when Sufi masters established their brotherhoods in the city.
Visiting the many mosques in the city is a great way to experience Essaouira’s spiritual energy. The most notable of these is the Moulay Hassan Mosque, which is located near the beach and is known for its stunning architecture.
I especially loved seeing sunsets over the Port de Essaouira that was once used as a military fortress and featured as a location in Game of Thrones.
Another way to experience Essaouira’s spiritual energy is by visiting the vibrant souks. I stopped and chatted with vendors selling everything from spices to textiles. They offered me a glimpse into the local culture and way of life.
It was incredible to see a variety of handmade goods and artisanal products, including jewellery and pottery, carpets. I wanted to buy everything.
If you’re looking for a more immersive spiritual experience, Essaouira is also home to several meditation and yoga centres. These centres are led by experienced teachers who specialize in various practices such as mindfulness, yoga, and meditation.
Lastly, Essaouira is known for its annual Gnawa Festival, which celebrates the city’s Sufi heritage. The festival takes place every June and brings together musicians and dancers from around the world.
The festival is a unique opportunity to experience Essaouira’s spiritual energy in a vibrant and lively atmosphere.
Where to Stay
If you’re planning a trip to Essaouira, one of the best places to stay is Riad Baldwin. This traditional Moroccan house has been transformed into a boutique hotel, offering a luxurious and authentic experience.
Riad Baldwin is located in the heart of the old city, just a short walk away from the beach and the bustling souks. The riad has been lovingly restored and features traditional Moroccan architecture and design, with intricate mosaics, carved plasterwork, and vibrant textiles.
It offers a range of rooms and suites, each one uniquely decorated and featuring modern amenities and traditional Moroccan interior features.
One of the highlights of staying at Riad Baldwin is the rooftop terrace, which offers panoramic views of the city and the sea. It is the perfect place to relax and soak in the sun or enjoy a romantic dinner under the stars.
The staff at Riad Baldwin are friendly and attentive. They went out of their way to make sure I have a memorable stay. They can offer recommendations for local restaurants, activities, and attractions, as well as arrange transportation and tours.
In Conclusion
Essaouira is a beautiful city that offers much more than just its natural beauty and historical sites. Its spiritual energy, infused with centuries of mysticism and spirituality, makes it a truly unique destination.
Whether you’re looking for relaxation, reflection, or a more immersive spiritual experience, Essaouira has something to offer for everyone.
It helped me to centre and get more clarity on the goals I set myself this year. It’s an easy flight from Stanstead, I’m already planning my next visit.
