Burnout is a common experience, especially in our fast-paced city. Most of the time we don’t even recognise it but it leaves us feeling overwhelmed and drained. In this blog post, let’s explore a few strategies for recovering from burnout and restoring balance and energy in your life.
By recognizing the signs, implementing self-care practices, and setting boundaries, you can bounce back and prioritize your well-being much quicker. Often we leave things to settle on their own but this can take a long time and also suppressed feelings and emotions always find a way back to haunt us.
Burnout can affect anyone, regardless of their profession or lifestyle. It is important to understand that burnout is not a sign of weakness but rather an indication that self-care and balance need to be prioritized. Have you been putting your work ahead of yourself? Prioritizing energy-depleting relationships or have you simply forgotten to give yourself the love that you might be seeking outside yourself?
The signs of burnout
Recognizing the signs and symptoms of burnout is the first step towards recovery. These can include physical and emotional exhaustion, a decrease in productivity, cynicism, and detachment. By acknowledging and accepting these symptoms, you can take proactive measures to address them.
Burnout recovery through self-care
Self-care is crucial in recovering from burnout. Start by setting aside dedicated time for relaxation and activities that bring you joy. This could involve engaging in hobbies, practising mindfulness or meditation, or simply taking breaks to recharge. By nurturing yourself, you replenish your energy and feeling of good in your body. I also love to journal and focus on where uncovering in my subconscious why prioritising others is something I’d choose in the first place.
Boundaries
Setting boundaries is essential in preventing and recovering from burnout. Learn to say no to excessive commitments and delegate tasks when possible. Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life, allowing yourself time to recharge and engage in activities unrelated to work. Saying no is so empowering and a tool that has literally changed my life. Practice saying NO and setting healthy boundaries in your day-to-day starting today. Let it become a second nature and believe me when I say, you will barely recognise yourself in the months to come.
Workload Management
Managing workload and priorities is key to overcoming burnout. Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and prioritize them based on importance and urgency. Avoid overloading yourself with too many responsibilities and learn to delegate or seek support when necessary. I can tell you that 90% of the time you will get paid the same whether you work overtime or not, so don’t go out of your way to make someone else rich and focus on your well-being instead.
Somatic therapy
Practising stress-relief techniques can significantly contribute to your recovery. Explore different techniques such as deep breathing exercises, yoga, or journaling to release tension and cultivate a sense of calm. Find what works best for you and incorporate these practices into your daily routine. I love to dance when I feel I’ve lost my way.
Moving my body in uncontrolled ways helps tap into stored energy in our nervous system and can be a great tool in realising the dormant energy including trauma. When you put your favourite song next just let yourself move in the way your body asking you to and if you feel like screaming – scream. If you feel like crying – cry, the release is a goal here and never suppress it.
Recovery
Recovering from burnout requires a holistic approach that encompasses both physical and emotional well-being. Prioritize healthy habits such as getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, and engaging in regular physical activity. Taking care of your body directly impacts your mental and emotional resilience. Once your body feels safe again you may feel extra tired so make sure you give yourself enough time to sleep, rest and rejuvenate. Drink plenty of water to help flush out any stuck energy as this will immensely help in the long run.
Remember that recovering from burnout is a process that takes time and patience. Celebrate small victories along the way and be kind to yourself. Seek support from loved ones or consider professional help if needed. With persistence and self-care, you can regain balance, energy, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Even when it’s so hard, always prioritise your wellbeing. Quit your job or client if you need to and work on the mindset that better things are out there. I can’t even begin to tell you the blessings that came to me from taking risks and prioritising my well being. My life has changed so much and if I can do it, anyone can.
Sending love to your beautiful soul and know that you got this.
