You have done everything right.
You have cut out the foods that supposedly cause problems. You have taken the probiotics, the digestive enzymes, the magnesium. You have been to the GP, had the tests, been told everything looks fine.
And yet your gut is still a mess.
I spent years in this exact loop. And the answer I eventually found had nothing to do with what I was eating.
The Conversation Nobody Had With Me
Your gut is not running independently of the rest of you.
It is directly governed by your nervous system. Specifically, by the vagus nerve — the main pathway of your parasympathetic nervous system, which only functions properly when your body feels genuinely safe.
When you are stressed — and I do not mean obviously, acutely stressed, I mean the chronic background hum of pressure that most high-functioning women carry without even recognising it as stress — that parasympathetic activity decreases. And digestion goes with it.
There is a state beyond stress that is even harder to recognise from the inside. It is called freeze. Not a dramatic shutdown — more like a body that has been running on survival for so long it has quietly started to power down. Low energy. Low motivation. Low everything. Including digestion.
This is where I was for a long time. And my gut was the loudest signal I had — I just did not know how to read it.
Three Signs Your Gut Is Stuck in This State
Everything moves slowly, or not at all
You eat and feel heavy, bloated, uncomfortable — not from a specific food but just from eating. Food is not moving through your body the way it should. Nothing absorbs properly. In a nervous system shutdown, digestion is one of the first things to be rationed because the body is too busy managing survival to spare the energy.
Constipation that does not budge
This one surprised me when I learned it. The freeze state does not only immobilise your ability to make decisions or feel emotions. It can immobilise physical movement through the body too. Practitioners working in somatic therapy consistently observe chronic constipation in people whose nervous systems are stuck in this protective state. When stress has nowhere to go, nothing moves — including elimination.
Tests that show nothing but something is clearly wrong
This is the most maddening one. Normal results. No structural cause. But your body is clearly not working correctly. What standard testing often misses is the state of your nervous system — specifically its ability to shift out of survival mode and into the rest and digest state where healing and normal function actually happen. Nothing is broken. The system is just stuck.
What I Wish Someone Had Said Earlier
No probiotic will regulate your nervous system.
That is not a criticism of probiotics. It is just that they are addressing the downstream effect of a problem that starts further up the chain.
The body needs to feel safe before it can digest properly. That safety is not something you can eat your way into. It comes from working with the nervous system directly — discharging the stored stress that is keeping the system in survival, addressing the emotional patterns that are held in the body, and building genuine physiological safety over time.
For me, this looked like finally getting my labs done — discovering that my ferritin was depleted and my hormones were struggling, which was adding biological pressure on top of an already dysregulated nervous system. It looked like somatic practices that moved stress through the body rather than suppressing it. It looked like EFT to metabolise what had been held for years. And it looked like slowing down in a way I had been resisting for most of my adult life.
My gut did not heal because I found the right diet. It healed because I finally created enough safety in my body that digestion could happen again.
If your gut is chronically unsettled and you have exhausted the obvious answers, consider that this might be the one you have not tried yet.
