Dating in London: Why I Decided to Try Something a Little Different

Living in London has this funny way of making everything feel possible and impossible at the same time.

You can walk through Soho on a Friday night and feel like the entire world is packed into a few streets. Every bar is full, restaurants are buzzing, and the city has that energy that makes you feel like something interesting could happen at any moment.

And yet, if you talk to people who actually live here, a lot of them will tell you the same thing: dating in London can feel surprisingly difficult.

Maybe it’s the size of the city. Maybe it’s the fact that everyone seems busy all the time. Or maybe it’s simply the reality that when there are millions of people around you, it’s not always easy to find someone who shares the same outlook on life.

A few months ago I realised I had fallen into the usual London dating routine. Download an app, swipe for a while, have a couple of conversations that fade away, then delete it again.

Sound familiar?

So I decided to try something different.

Discovering a More Intentional Dating Space

Instead of downloading another mainstream dating app, I came across SALT, which is designed specifically for Christian singles.

What interested me wasn’t just the faith aspect, although that obviously plays a big role for many people. It was the idea of starting conversations with people who might already share similar values.

When you live in a big city like London, you meet people from every background imaginable. That diversity is one of the things I love most about the city, but it can also mean that dating sometimes feels like starting from scratch every time.

With SALT, the profiles feel a little different. People tend to talk more openly about what matters to them, whether that’s their faith, lifestyle, or long-term plans.

It changes the tone of conversations quite quickly.

A Surprisingly Global Community

One thing that stood out to me is how international the platform feels.

London is already one of the most global cities in the world, so it actually makes sense that the people you meet through an app might not all be from the same neighbourhood. Some travel often, some have moved here for work, and others are simply exploring connections beyond their usual circles.

The app also shows who’s currently active, which sounds like a small feature but actually makes conversations feel more natural. Instead of sending a message and wondering if someone will reply three days later, you can start chatting with people who are online at the same time.

There’s also something called “Table” discussions, which are live audio conversations where people talk about topics like relationships, faith, or everyday life. It’s a bit different from the typical dating app format and feels more like joining a conversation than going on a date straight away.

Does It Change London Dating?

I’m not going to pretend any app magically fixes dating in London.

The city is still big, people still live on opposite sides of the Tube map, and schedules can still make meeting up feel like organising a small expedition.

But trying something more focused did change the experience slightly.

Instead of endless profiles and random conversations, it felt more like meeting people who were already looking in the same direction.

And in a city where everything moves fast, that kind of clarity actually feels quite refreshing.
