On my recent visit to Kefalonia, I rented a car with a friend and embarked on the island exploration. Kefalonia is a big island and there is so much to do and see that one day is not enough. However, if you do have a limited amount of time, I picked a few must see places in Kefalonia.
Kefalonia is located west side of Greece mainland and is surrounded by Ionian sea. The island is known for its rugged landscaped, beautiful beaches and caves. With that in mind, Melissani Cave was our first stop!
Melissani Cave
Melissani Cave is one of the highlights of the Kefalonia island and this is according to locals. The cave is located north-west of the town Sami and it’s positioned inland rather than on the sea coast. It has the most beautiful and blue water ever and I was so happy to see it. We took a little boat around the cave and managed to take a bunch of lovely photos, thanks to our friendly boat driver. You should bear in mind that this is a tourist attraction and it will be busy. The entrance fee is around 7 euros and totally worth it. The best time to visit if you are into taking photos is around midday when the Sun is right above the cave, making the water glittery and allowing gorgeous flare in your photos.
Short car drive from Melissani Cave is the Antisamos Beach which is another must visit beach if you are Kefalonia. The water here is so beautiful and colourful ranging from different shades of turquoise. White pebbles make such a beautiful contrast that I really urge you to visit. The Antisamos Beach is also known for being a shooting locating for one of the scenes of Captain Corelli’s Mandoline with Penelope Cruiz and Nicholas Kage. The beach was really quiet when we visited so I managed to take a lot of gorgeous shots. On our way back to the F Zeen retreat, we stopped at the prettiest village Agia Efimia.
Greek culture is very similar to Serbian and I always feel at home, when I visit Greece. The hospitality and selfishness of Greek people make the country such a perfect place and positive environment to spend as much time as possible in. We drove through Agia Efimia and it was one of those places that made you make a little stop and admire the culture and local life. We stopped at this pretty bakery serving all sorts of Greek delicacies including yummy cakes and baklavas. We were given traditional Greek cake for free which was so yummy.
What do you guys think of my photos and recommendations to do in Kefalonia? I’m really excited to visit Greece again this year and share my adventures with you guys.
